How to use AuraFocus4

AuraFocus4 makes its sound live on your phone to help you focus or relax. The quick version: put on headphones, pick a preset, press Start.

Quick start. 1) Put on stereo headphones. 2) Tap Deep Work, Flow or Calm. 3) Tap Start. 4) Tap Stop when you are done, or let the timer finish.

1Before you start

Use stereo headphones. Binaural beats need a slightly different tone in each ear. On a speaker the effect is lost. Start with the volume low and raise it slowly to a comfortable level.

AuraFocus4 is for focus and relaxation. It is not a medical device. If you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder, a heart or hearing condition, or are pregnant, ask your doctor first, and stop if you feel unwell.

2Pick a preset

You can change presets while the sound is playing. The change is smooth.

3Set the timer

Tap Customize at the bottom, then move the Timer slider (1 to 120 minutes). Set the timer before you press Start. When it finishes, the sound fades out and a soft chime rings.

4Start and stop

Tap Start. The sound fades in over about two seconds and the countdown begins. Tap Stop at any time; the sound fades out gently. The session keeps playing if you switch apps or turn off the screen. A notification shows that it is running and has a Stop button.

If the sound stops when the screen turns off, set the app’s battery option to Unrestricted (Settings > Apps > AuraFocus4 > Battery).

5Guided breathing

Tap the Breathing card to open it. During a session the circle grows as you breathe in, holds, and shrinks as you breathe out, with the phase and seconds shown below it. Pick a pattern with the buttons:

Breathe through your nose and keep it comfortable. If you feel dizzy, return to normal breathing.

6Nature sounds

Switch on Nature Sounds and choose Rain, Ocean or Wind. Use the Volume slider to blend it with the tones. These sounds are generated live, like everything else in the app.

7Fine-tune the sound

Open Customize to adjust everything while the sound plays:

8Pomodoro mode

In Customize, switch on Pomodoro mode. The Timer slider becomes the focus length. Choose a break length (1 to 30 minutes) and the number of focus rounds (2 to 8). A chime marks each change. During breaks the tones become quieter and the screen shows BREAK with your round number. Tap Start once and the app runs the whole sequence.

9Save your own presets

Set the sound the way you like it. In Customize, scroll to My presets, type a name and tap Save. Your preset appears as a button under the three main presets. Tap it to load it, or tap Delete in Customize to remove it. You can keep up to 12.

10Progress

Tap Progress to see minutes focused today, your day streak, your best streak and a 7-day chart. A day counts after at least one minute of focus. Breaks are not counted. This history stays on your phone and is never sent anywhere.
